Facebook CEO Marks Zuckerberg had announced at F8 developer conference that a new feature for WhatsApp Messenger will go live later this year which will enable users to make group video and audio calls. Since then users had been anxiously waiting for the feature to be rolled out. Finally, the long wait is over, the feature has arrived. “WhatsApp encrypted group video calling for everyone” feature is now live on both Android and iOS devices. According to an official statement, users can now make a group call up to four people- anywhere and anytime. “We’re excited to announce that group calls for voice and video are coming to WhatsApp starting today. Over the last couple of years, people have enjoyed making voice and video calls on WhatsApp. In fact, our users spend over 2 billion minutes on calls per day,” the company said in a blog post.
To enjoy this feature, users will have to download the latest version of WhatsApp Application from the Google or Apple play store.
The popular instant messaging Apps like Facebook Messenger and Snapchat support group video calls of up to 50 and 16 participants respectively. On the other hand, Apple is all set to roll out a new feature with its iOS 12 launch later this year which will support up to 32 people at a time.
Tech giants across the world believe that WhatsApp group video calling feature will be enjoyed by the users as they treat the instant messaging App acquired by Facebook as their primary messaging platform and use it for both personal and official tasks.
They say the addition of this feature to WhatsApp is a part of a Facebook strategy to make its app multifunctional which means people might be less likely to open other Apps for making video or audio calls.
After the launch of its latest feature in July 2018, “encrypted group video calling for everyone”, we can safely say that since the launch of this App, its popularity is increasing with every passing day. It has become the most preferred correspondence today.
After the release of WhatsApp messenger in 2009, many new important features have been added to this instant messaging App. When WhatsApp came into the market, it was mainly a text messaging App.
Today, you can send images, videos, graphics and stickers etc. to your WhatsApp contacts. You can make audio and video calls to your friends. You can use it for marketing your products and services.
In 2018, Facebook added many other features to WhatsApp. Some of them were regular features and some were more important from the user’s perspective.
Let us take a cursory Look at the WhatsApp features which were launched in 2018.
WhatsApp is currently the most popular instant messaging App for Smartphones. Its user base is growing constantly which reflects its popularity and worth on the Market.
Instant messaging App which is now owned by Facebook after acquiring it in February 2014 has 1.5 billion active users around the globe, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in February 2018. According to Zuckerberg, WhatsApp users are exchanging nearly 60 billion messages in a single day.
When we compare the features of other instant messaging Apps of the same type on the market, like Wechat, Viber, and Telegram etc. with the features of WhatsApp, there is not too much difference. All the instant messaging Apps for Smartphones have almost similar features. In fact, WhatsApp lags behind them in many features and other respects.
Then what made this instant messaging App so popular in a very short time and why every Smartphone user thinks it is mandatory to install WhatsApp on their phones- we will take a look at the reasons behind it.
Here are some of the reasons why WhatsApp is still a pioneer instant messaging App:
WhatsApp was a first of its kind instant messaging Application when it came around in 2009. Today, when we take a look around, there are scores of instant messaging Apps. Viber and Facebook Messenger came in 2011. Telegram Messenger was released in August.
At that time, Skype had not been yet made available for smartphones. There was Skype, which excelled for its video and Audio Calling but it was available only for the PC.
WhatsApp was more for messages while as Skype was for making video and audio calls.
WhatsApp became more popular among young people as they are more into the message thing than the older people.
Before the release of WhatsApp instant Messaging App, SMS and the Email were two major routes to exchange text, images and videos. But people were constantly complaining about the Price of SMS. It was expensive and limited.
The entry of WhatsApp fixed this problem.Unlike SMS, people are now able to send messages without counting words and without being restricted to the number of contacts. You may be surprised to know that in some countries, one SMS could cost as much as a dollar.
If you have a phone and a mobile number, you just need to install WhatsApp messenger on your device and start sending messages to people. You can easily send messages to the contacts saved in your mobile if they too are using the App. This was its advantage over Skype. And unlike Skype, people can’t hide behind a fake identity. Your number is your identity.
WhatsApp was a strict mobile App which was not for computers.Unlike PCs, people could carry mobile phones in their pockets or bags. it could run on so many platforms WhatsApp came at a time when internet was getting cheaper and accessible in many places.
