If you do not know about the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight, you are either from another planet or your life is miserably boring. The mega tie up between the former rage of the boxing world and current rage of the mixed martial arts world. Both are kings in their own sense and back their trash talking skills with their actions and grit. But come this August 26, 2017, the fighters would need a lot more than just that to prove themselves against each other. As we approach the date of the collision of the boxing and MMA realms, a certain trend can be seen as well. The boxing world is gradually getting behind Floyd Mayweather. This is something even the pundits did not expect given Mayweather’s reputation among other boxers. McGregor, on the other hand, does not enjoy the same conditions as the mixed martial arts world is rather less friendly when it comes to rivalries. Not that the Irishman cares even a bit but it does have a subconscious effect on the fighter mind.
That being said, the odds are already in Mayweather’s favour. In the previous article, we discussed how the biggest fight of the century can might as well be the biggest one sided fight of the century. Floyd Mayweather is fighting the match on his own terms. The primary obligations restrain McGregor from using his elbows and legs for striking. So basically, a fighter who is known to be a striking technician and who’s kicks are considered the best of his attacks is asked not to strike… with his kicks. Hmmmm. Well played Floyd, well played. But this only makes us respect Conor McGregor more as he is man enough to accept the challenge head on. The major concern, however, rising now is for the Irishman’s chances of actually winning the bout. But it’s never too late, not even if you are fighting, arguably the best boxer of all time. Here are the things that might help McGregor turn the odds in his favour and knock the hell out of Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.
The southpaw or the unorthodox stance in boxing is referred to the left-handed boxers. Their stance is opposite to that of the standard stance wherein you keep your left arm ahead of your right arm in order to jab with the left and then follow it up with a right cross or a right hook. Contrary to this, a southpaw or a boxer with an unorthodox stance would keep his right arm ahead of his left arm, and use his right arm to jab and the left arm to throw a cross or hook. This is usually problematic for an orthodox boxer as they face difficulties in intercepting the next move and various movements of the southpaw boxer. Conor McGregor is essentially a southpaw and can use this to his benefit. It is, however, difficult to trick someone as experienced (and good) as Floyd Mayweather but it is worth a shot.
No matter what anyone says, in my opinion as well as according to general consensus, boxing is a much tougher sport when it comes to testing a person’s endurance. You just cannot get into a ring and think that you would win a match simply by punching your way through your opponent. Boxing is much more than that. Professional boxers usually go head to head for 12 rounds. 12 rounds is a lot and it would take a mountain of endurance and stamina to go the distance if the need be. Conor McGregor, on the other hand, has no prior experience in going the distance. The UFC fights he has been in have gone till the 4th rounds. McGregor needs to work on his stamina if wishes to show the world what he is made of come this 26th August 2017.
The other way Conor McGregor can turn the tables is by doing what he does best, that is, wrap the fight as early as he can. If he charges at Mayweather without giving him the time think of a plan or reacting to his movements, McGregor has a really thick chance of knocking the former champ off of his feet. One of his former opponents, Nate Diaz, spoke in an interview and stated that McGregor has a very good chance at winning if he does something in the earlier rounds of the fight. Mayweather is a seasoned campaigner and he knows how to time his punches. Conor, on the other hand, has a limited number of moves and is relatively an amateur when it comes to going the distance. His best chance is if he can make use of his movements, his reach, and his power punches in the first 2 or 3 rounds.
There is no doubt about who is more experienced between the two. Floyd Mayweather has been in several matches and knows his way around the ring. He has a 50 percent + knockout ratio and is good on the defence. He is also known for his knack for exploiting opportunities when they arise. In the given scenario, Conor McGregor needs to be really patient as it would serve him good in his match against Floyd. At the end of the day, all it takes is one punch. Conor also has to realise that if he wins the bout he will be unanimously be named as the best combat athlete on the face of the planet, regardless of his pound for pound statistics, for he will be winning against arguably the greatest of all time.
There are surely a lot of things that ‘Notorious’ McGregor needs to overcome before his bout with Mayweather Jr. But the most important thing would be his mindset. We all know that Conor McGregor defines the new age spirit of ‘not giving up’. As he also stated one of his pre-match interviews that the only thing that is impossible to beat in the world is the person who does not know how to give up. If he is able to maintain this mindset till August 26, he is bound to give a performance that will be remembered by generations to come. Apart from this, we all know McGregor’s journey from getting government welfare cheques for survival to cashing in multi-million dollar fights and travelling in a Jaguar. If he could draw motivation from his struggles, which he probably already does, come August, he will be ready for the mega fight.
This is the biggest deal of the year 2017. IT cannot get bigger than this. And if everything goes as per plan, we will be seeing something we Pay per View television has never seen before.
