So, everyone is all hyped-up for the new Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing matchup. And for every reason it is very normal to be excited about such a matchup. In fact it would be abnormal to not be psyched about such a matchup. The former is a retired boxing legend who has fifteen international titles under his belt and is considered the most successful boxer of all time, and he is going to fight the latter who is a mixed martial arts megastar on his way to the UFC hall of fame, or at least we think so. Both the aforementioned fighters have a few things in common and no it does not include their short heights. In fact, it is their big mouths and their ability to back it up. And that is why this matchup is so special because finally the two will be fighting someone very similar to their own personas. But when it comes to the technicality of the matchup, Floyd Mayweather has an unfair advantage. Want to find out why? All you need to do is read.
The match is not a typical David vs. Goliath bout. In fact, it is rather a David vs. David fight, like literally. Both the Davids are excruciatingly good at what they do. But the twist in the tale comes when you realize that one of the Davids is not going to do what he is good at. Yes, you read it right. Conor McGregor is not going to kick or use his elbows. He is bound by contractual terms and conditions and cannot utilize his elbows or his legs in his pursuit of dropping Floyd Mayweather like a bad habit. This really turns the tables as he is indeed famous for his kicks and punches. It is his air game that launched him into fighting stardom against quite formidable opponents.
Floyd Mayweather, on the other hand, is a smart fighter. His credentials as a world class fighter cannot be overlooked. As mentioned earlier, he has fifteen world titles under his belt and has dominated the championship in four different weight categories or classes. He has been known to win the fights on his own conditions and the surprising thing is he even gets to get away with it. It would be too easy to say that McGregor accepted Mayweather’s terms of the fight just to earn money. I mean, who wouldn’t step into the ring with a boxing legend to make a seven figure pay day. But I think it is something more than that. Conor McGregor is a raging fire that has turned the world of combat sports upside down. Be it his antics, his trash talking, his skill for making rivals on the go, his charismatic passion for the sport, or be it the story of his struggles in Dublin that led him to the gates of the octagon ring and to the hearts of the people.
The fact that the match is going to be a plain old money spinner takes away a lot from the actual excitement it should have had on the boxing and mixed martial arts fans around the globe but it does, however, portray Conor McGregor as a gutsy man. I mean, say whatever you want to but it takes guts to enter into a fight with a renowned boxing legend and that too in terms own terms. Conor McGregor has to pull up his socks real tight if he is planning to knock Mayweather to the dirt.
Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old, 5’8” tall, weighs 147 pounds and has an orthodox stance. Notorious on the other hand is 28 years old, taller than Mayweather by an inch coming in at 5’9”, weighs 155 pounds, and would probably be playing with an orthodox stance. As far the reach is concerned, Mayweather can go up to 72 inches whereas McGregor can go as deep as 74 inches. But the bane for the two comes in terms of age and playing style. Floyd Mayweather may have been a champion, made history in terms of Pay per View earnings, have had an undefeated streak of 49-0, but he is getting old. The former multi-division champion is over 40 years old and is not in his prime anymore. People may forget this fact but age does play a great role in a sport such as boxing. But this disadvantage sort of fades out when one comes to realize that Conor McGregor cannot elbow strike or kick in the fight. Conor may be a master in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, have expertise in Taekwondo and Wrestling but until he can use those kicks and elbow strikes to his favor, the Floyd Mayweather has a very thick chance of making the Irishman eat dust. Plus, as much as we want Conor McGregor to decimate Floyd Mayweather, we have to admit that Conor McGregor is not such a great boxer. We are talking about a guy who was declared a failure in Irish juniors as a competitive boxer. If these conditions are left as it is, Mayweather is going to have a huge upper hand in the match and it would be sufficient to turn the match in his favor.
But we should not underestimate Conor McGregor’s vigor and his ability to prove the odds wrong. The guy fought a strong man, Hafþór Júlíus "Thor" Björnsson for god’s sake in a promotional matchup. Many of you would know him by the name ‘The Mountain’ from Game of Thrones.
In terms of the ground game, Conor McGregor is not the best the world has seen. His previous bouts with Nate Diaz clearly displayed his shortcoming as a wrestler and the world saw Nate Diaz exploit this in their first bout on 5th March 2016 when Nate Diaz took out Conor McGregor to serve him his first defeat.
The winds have changed and to be honest, no one thought it would be so. Since the beginning of the Mayweather Vs. McGregor campaign, before the final agreement was signed, people had Conor McGregor as the victor in every sense of the word. But the recent developments in the contract and restrictions in moves and offenses has changed the odds in favor of ‘Money’ Mayweather. But the story isn’t over yet. McGregor is known for his grit and hard work, and most of all, overcoming all odds. The rest we will have to wait and watch. Whatever the result, it is surely going to be a blast on 26th August 2017.
