Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather or in other words, probably the most successful professional boxers in the history of professional boxing and the most hated one as well. Earlier, known as ‘pretty boy’ because he had no scars due to fighting, Floyd Mayweather retired after his fight with Berta with an unbeatable streak of 49-0, which equals the late Rocky Marciano’s professional streak. For those who don’t know, Rocky Marciano was a former professional boxer who held the World Heavyweight Championship in boxing. Over the years Floyd Mayweather has gathered quite a reputation for being a disrespectful jerk. He has been in cases of him causing domestic violence and the fact that he has been a predominantly arrogant person does not help rectify his image. On top that, the raging prize money from all his fights do not help the situation. But most people judge him because they do not know him and how far he has come. And to be really honest, Floyd does not give two sh*ts about what people think of him. And maybe that is why he has such a big fan following. You may admit it or not, but he portrays as a strong role model in terms of work ethic and success, if not a strong character. But the topic of concern which bothers me the most is that people still do not know about Floyd’s life or his origins. Here are some of the most unknown and somewhat boggling facts about Floyd Mayweather Jr.
You think your life is complicated? Trust me; your mom and dad not giving you the latest smartphone, your girlfriend not returning your calls, and your high school grades not getting better, do not even begin to define what a complicated childhood actually means. Good ol’ Floyd here had, what we I would call a complicated childhood.
Floyd was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA on the 24th of February in 1977. Hardly did anyone know that they were seeing the best boxer of this generation (according to stats at least) come into the world. Despite the fact that his family was full of professional boxers and that he was destined for a boxing career, his early years were nothing less than hell. His mother was addicted to substance abuse.
As if this was not enough, his father, Mayweather Sr. was involved in multiple cases of drug dealing. In the year 1978, he was even shot in the calf. Mayweather Jr. has stated that he can never forget that night. On that fateful night in 1978, a petrified father held his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr., to his chest not because he was expressing his love to his son, but he was using him as a shield against a man who was pointing a shotgun at him. Seriously, what kind of a father does that? Mayweather Sr. was even convicted in 1993 because of his involvement in cocaine trafficking.
This had a little Floyd live with his grandmother for the majority of his childhood. When his father was asked about this, he defended himself by stating that he did what he had to for providing his son with everything he needed. And when he got arrested, he left him in the good hands of his mother.
And you thought your life was complicated? Think again.
Floyd Mayweather was destined to be a boxer, if not the greatest of all time, which by the way he eventually did become. His father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. was a professional boxer and a welterweight division contender; his uncle, Roger Mayweather, was a professional boxer and a former super welterweight in the WBA and WBC; and his other uncle, Jeff Mayweather was a former super featherweight in the IBO.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. was handed his first boxing gloves when he was 8 years old. After that, he became a staple in the gym. All he had was his boxing gloves and the gym. He used to train every day. Before anyone knew, he had become a much talked about boxer in Michigan. As an amateur, he had an impressive record of 84-8. He also bagged a bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA, where he lost a controversial bout against the Bulgarian Serafim Todorov.
Floyd Mayweather is the richest athlete in the world. Well, that is not the interesting thing about him. The interesting thing is that all these earnings have come without any endorsements. Yes, all the earnings have been from fights and television appearances. All these riches have led the undefeated boxing champion to buy some of the world’s most expensive toys. Some of these lavish items include sports cars, supercars, watches, and a freaking USD 200 million private jet, the Gulfstream V. But this wasn’t enough for Floyd Mayweather as he bought another jet just for his bodyguards. He bought a whole private jet for his bodyguards because he is afraid of flight and thinks that the added weight of his protection unit can add to the risk of flying. Now that’s called class.
Floyd Mayweather’s watch collection is one of a kind. He is a known collector of watches and it is a proven fact. He often posts pictures of his watches on social media and flaunts the amazing collection from time to time. In one of the random fan interviews on YouTube, Floyd showed off his watch on camera and asked the interviewer the price of the watch. The price was later revealed to be USD 250,000. And it is reported that his entire watch collection is worth USD 6 million.
Now, this might sound a little irregular but Floyd Mayweather has a problem wearing the same underwear twice. This can also be seen in his pictures where he is seen in a new boxer short every time. According to my calculations, considering the number of days, weeks and months, Floyd Mayweather Jr. spends around USD 60,000 on his underwear. That is more than you spend on your entire house in a year.
Currently, his net worth amounts to USD 400 million. On an average, he bags approximately USD 100 million. According to statistics, in his bout against Manny Pacquiao, in the alleged ‘fight of the century’, he made somewhere around USD 150 million to USD 200 million. According to reports, he has made about USD 610 million in his lifetime.
Well, we do not have anything against personal grooming ever since Barney Stinson defended men having manicures and pedicures. After all, he is Barney Stinson. But even he had once every month. Floyd Mayweather, on the other hand, has taken male grooming to a whole new level. He has a manicure and pedicure every week and shaves his body every day. He believes that a hairless body is indeed a happy body. He has a personal barber as well who travels with him everywhere he goes. Why does he even need a barber? He doesn’t even have hair!
Justin Bieber, the Canadian pop star had reportedly trained under the champ for a brief period. Both are still good friends and remain close to this day. Apparently, it is easier to make rich friends when you yourself are filthy rich. Bieber was trained by Mayweather Jr. himself and also held his championship belts in his matchup against Manny Pacquiao. The Canadian pop star has a similar undefeated record in boxing. He has a total of ‘zero’ defeats out of a total of ‘zero’ fights as compared to Floyd Mayweather’s ‘zero’ losses out of a total of 49 fights.
