Earth’s Most Mysterious Lost Worlds- Part I

So, we have reached the point where we will be discussing the most mysterious lost worlds on Earth. Your wait is finally over as we are about to begin!

Bosavi Crater

Bosavi Crater

When it comes to the list of the most mysterious lost worlds on Earth, Bosavi Crater deserves to be placed atop. Located in the Southern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea, Mount Bosavi is a mountain that has been the topic of the fascination and curiosity of many scientists, cavers, and wildlife filmmakers. Mount Bosavi was a volcano on the Great Papuan Plateau which got extinct long ago and left Bosavi Crater. The collapse left behind a rainforest full of life in its place. It is indeed a huge surprise to know that such a creation is home to some of the most beautiful and rarest of the endemic species on Earth. But, to everyone’s incredulity, the place shelters more than 40 unique animals.

The Giant RAt

The discovery of this lost world is quite recent as the researchers found Bosavi Crater in 2009. The scientists tried to take help from the nearby indigenous groups of people to help them on their journey to explore more about the lost world. To their dismay, the natives stated that it was too inaccessible and way too dangerous for them to trek that far. The researchers tried much to find out more but due to poor weather conditions, they were forced to camp in the crater as it was not possible for helicopters to gain entry inside for extended periods of time. According to one camper, it was too hard to live inside the crater as its hot, sweaty, and stinky. But they found themselves to be very lucky to reach the lost world which was out of the reach of the humans.

Palawan Highlands

Palawan Highlands

A province in the Philippines, Palawan is associated with many mysteries. Specifically, the Palawan Highlands have always been linked to various obscurity and mysteries. It was in 2007 when a group of botanists traveled to a quarantine corner of the island and new endemic discoveries were made. These included blue mushrooms, pink ferns, and the most amazing of all, a huge carnivorous pitcher plant that can devour large rodents to small monkeys.

Purple Crab

The variety of flora and fauna which was thought to be extinct few years ago still prevailed in the corners of Palawan for countless years. The diversity of species found in Palawan ranges from purple crabs which seem to be crawling straight from a storybook; to the Palawan Water Monitor, which is a lizard that that can reach up to 7 feet long, and last but not the least, the Palawan bearded pigs who are way too disheveled than any human can ever be. Looking at the uniqueness of the Palawan Highlands, it is proved that even after thousands of years of exploring, a lot is yet to be discovered on our Earth.

East Scotia Ridge

East Scotia Ridge

What makes this section of the Scotia Plate in the South Atlantic so special? The answer to this question lies in the strange life that exists just off the coast of South America in a tectonic plate at 8000 feet below sea level. As per the studies, it has been found that the temperatures here can reach up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. The reason being the hydrothermal vents running through the area. But that’s not the actual reason which makes it so unique. The thing that amazes is the fact that it is not far from Antarctica which is well-known for its frigid temperatures.

Ghost Octopus

On this land unknown to the rest of the world, several mysterious creatures were discovered. One of them is a new type of Yeti Crab, a peculiar furry crustacean. In addition to the Yeti Crab, a lovely ‘ghost-pale’ octopus was also found in the recent years. Not only this, various unknown anemones and barnacles were also discovered. Since the area lies deeper, the life in this isolated lost world is colorless since light cannot penetrate through these depths. It is remarkable for the mankind to be living in the 21st Century and still not knowing the fundamental things about what lives on our planet. This is very intriguing as it always keeps the door open for more discoveries down the road.

Melville Range

Melville Range

Located on the oriental coastline of the Cape York Promontory, Melville Range is a headland that is often regarded as a ‘lost world’ because of the presence of the exclusive creatures that live there. These idiosyncratic species have managed to survive for so long on their own. Not only these species but a special field on the range also makes it so eccentric. No, we are not talking about a field of daisies. We are speaking of the granite boulders that have naturally helped in preventing fires from damaging the area along with allowing the area to retain moisture.

Lizard

Not everyone has been able to step on the Melville range, the hazy rain forest that lies on the top of the Cape Melville. The species of plants and animals found on Cape Melville are not indigenous but endemic to the region. Some of the rarest species found in Melville Range include the foxtail palm, the blotched boulder frog, the Cape Melville shade skink and last but not the least, Cape Melville leaf-tailed gecko.
